God in Albania

Albania is unique. This statement may seems exaggerated in many ways, but it certainly applies to the area of religion, at least in the European context. Nowhere else on the continent do so many religions exist side by side: Catholic and Orthodoc Christianity, Sunni Islam and the Bektashi order, plus small a small Jewish communty and more recently, protestant faith group. But what makes Albania genuinely unique is its state atheism. From 1967 until the fall of the communist regime, all religions were banned.

I am fascinated by the fact that people in Albania live in peace with each other, despite having different religions. With this project I wanted to expose this unique feature of the country. Combining portraits with documentary photographs made this project even more special to me.
